What Causes Skin To Age?
As we age, our skin becomes drier, thinner, slacker and not as plump as it once was and as fat is lost beneath the skin it becomes slacker. To some extent, genetic play a part in how early this happens, but lifestyle also plays its part.
Diet, smoking, sun exposure, alcohol abuse and stress, will all take there toll on the appearance of our skin.
Poor nutrition and lifestyle choices will certainly contribute to premature ageing of the skin. Not feeding your body with enough nutrients and not drinking enough water will eventually result in dry, flaky and dull looking skin.
Sun and environmental exposures. One of THE most ageing things you can subject your face to is sunbathing. This exposure will cause premature lines, wrinkles and age spots.
Applying chemicals will strip skin of necessary natural oils, fats and a certain amount will be absorbed into the skin
What Does Skin Comprise?
Our skin comprises of three layers, epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous.
• The epidermis is the outer layer and made up of mainly dead cells with lipids in between
• The dermis is the next layer and comprises collage and elastic fibres
• The subcutaneous layer is the final layer and is composed of elastic and fibrous connective tissue
As skin cells develop they are pushed up to the the epidermis and become flatter as keratin begins to form. The lipids are important as they provide additional protection and nourishment for the collagen in the dermis. While collagen maintains the strength and elasticity of the skin, the lipids need to be healthy in order to keep the skin plump and hydrated and prevent the collagen from becoming dry and brittle
