Do We Need Preservatives In Skin Care?
Good question- and the answer is yes – and no.
Many of our skin care products do not contain water and in that case we do not need to use a preservative and will use anti-oxidants and Vitamin E to ensure the product remains fresh
When a product containing water come into contact with air, a process called oxidation starts
to occur. This eventually causes oils to become rancidand this is why, when we have any product that contains water a preservative must be used in order to kill microorganisms and water borne bacteria and prevent the growth of fungus, mould and yeast. We use the recommended amount to ensure that none of these nasties can grow on the surface of the product.
I know that some companies use Vitamin E, Rosemary Extract and Grapefruit Seed Extract and claim that they are preservatives, but they are not and – while they can sometimes slow down the process of oxidition – they will not stop it completely.
If you purchase a product from many of the large companies, they will often last for years with no sign of discolouration and no change in smell. Imagine how much preservative these products contain to stay usable for that amount of time.
We are constantly looking out for fresh, new ingredients to include in our products and will always make sure that we only use those that offer the very best in natural skin care
